A viral disease of dogs affecting puppies more frequently than adult dogs. The Parvo virus grow in rapidly dividing cells like the intestinal lining (the biggest concentration of rapidly dividing cells in a puppy's body). Parvo kills these cells, causing diarrhea (often bloody), depression and suppression of white blood cells. Very young puppies can be infected in heart leading to sudden death.
The most common virus in dogs, Parvo can be very hard to vaccinate a puppy successfully because of the mothers antibody protection the puppies receive while nursing. Vets recommend vaccinating starting at 6 weeks and continuing every 3 to 4 weeks tell 20 weeks of age.
