Prevenile
Intervet - West Nile vaccine
DESCRIPTION:
PreveNile™ contains a lyophilized Yellow Fever West Nile (YF-WN) chimera virus vaccine. The human vaccine yellow fever virus, YF-17D, was used as the backbone. The YF-17D strain is a highly effective, well-tolerated live, attenuated vaccine that has been used for over 60 years to immunize approximately 400 million people1. The YF-17D virus was modified using molecular technology to form a YF-WN chimera virus that expresses the PreMembrane and Envelope proteins of WNV. Following injection, limited replication of the YF-WN chimera virus allows expression of these proteins that stimulate a protective immune response in the horse.
INDICATIONS:
For the vaccination of healthy horses to prevent viremia and as an aid in the prevention of disease and encephalitis caused by West Nile virus infection.
SAFETY DATA:
Studies have shown that the YF-WN chimera virus in PreveNile™ has limited to no replication in cells of mosquitoes or in the mosquito vectors of West Nile Virus or Yellow Fever Virus2. Studies of the YF-WN chimera virus in non-target animal species also show a lack of pathogenicity3. Safety studies have demonstrated that the vaccine virus is stable and does not revert to virulence, does not disseminate into the tissues of vaccinated horses, and is not shed by vaccinated horses following administrations.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT PREVENILE

Q. What is the technology behind PreveNile West Nile Virus Vaccine?

A. PreveNile uses advanced chimera technology – the combination of two similar viral structures into one. Because the two viral structures are very similar, PreveNile can generate a safe, effective immune response.
Q. What are the benefits of the PreveNile West Nile Virus chimera technology?

A. Extremely safe – 99.9 percent reaction free in field safety trials. • Highly effective – In severe challenge studies at 28 days in horses 5 months of age or older after a single dose, no clinical signs in 95 percent of vaccinates, and no fever or viremia in 100 percent of vaccinates.
• Full 12 months duration of immunity in yearlings or older horses vaccinated with a single dose. • Single dose – no booster needed.
Q. Which horses can be vaccinated with PreveNile West Nile Virus Vaccine?

A. • Foals as young as 5 months. • Healthy horses previously vaccinated with another WNV vaccine. • Healthy horses never vaccinated for WNV.
Q. Is PreveNile West Nile Virus Vaccine safe?

A. Yes. PreveNile has been rigorously tested for both effectiveness and safety. In field safety trials, 99.9 percent of vaccinated horses did not experience any adverse reactions including injection site reactions.
Q. How soon will my horse be protected from WNV?

A. In a severe challenge study horses 5-months of age or older vaccinated with a single dose of PreveNile demonstrated onset of immunity 28 days post vaccination. Study results indicated no clinical signs in 95 percent of vaccinates and no fever or viremia in 100 percent of vaccinates.
Q. Does one dose really protect for a full year?

A. Yes. Because of the makeup of the vaccine, PreveNile only requires a single dose to generate a protective immune response. In studies, 100 percent of yealings aged or older horses vaccinated with PreveNile were protected from fever and viremia and 89 percent were protected from clinical signs of West Nile infection 12 months after vaccination.
Q. My horse lives in Florida? Will he need to have a second shot in the fall?

A. No. Studies conducted on yearlings or older horses vaccinated with a single dose of PreveNile showed the horses retained full protection 12 months after their primary vaccination.
